president obama and mitt romney squared off for the first of three presidential debates last night. in what some are calling a polite war of words, the candidates sparred over job creation, taxes and the future of health care. nbc's tracie potts is in denver for us. she has a preview. good morning to you, tracie. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. the pressure was on for romney to perform, to back up his ideas with details, taking on the man that even republicans called one of the most skilled debaters in modern politics. the point of this debate was to make differences clear on lowering the debt. >> you said you'd cut the deficit in half. it's four years later, we still have trillion-dollar deficit. >> the way we do is for additional cut, we ask for a dollar of additional revenue, paid for, as i indicated earlier, by asking those of us who have done very well in this country to contribute a little bit more to reduce the deficit. >> reporter: the president insisted romney would spend $5 trillion on tax breaks favoring the wealthy. >> math, common sense and our history shows us that's

romney didn't need me last night. i have seen some of the highlights and i was pretty impressed with his performance. >> we heard dan lothian talking about the white house spin. they said, it's not going to shift the race dramatically. do you agree that sort of one-night performance in a debate, to play it up as being a game changer is not correct? >> well about 90 to 95% of americans have decided, there's about 5% less, so nothing really changes dramatically. so you're trying to shift the 4, 5, 6, 7% of the vote that might shift at this point. i think most everybody else is pretty much going to set on where they're going to do. so you are shooting for a small amount of people, some in the middle. but interestingly, people are always talking about the middle, there are people on both extremes. when ralph nader takes votes, libertarians take votes. they need to be worried about people on either side of the spectrum as well. it's still a pretty small number. >> senator, i watch you every day on capitol hill trying to ge
